Principle of Incremental Rotary Optical Encoder
An incremental rotary encoder provides cyclical outputs (only) when the encoder is rotated. The incremental rotary encoder is the most widely used of all rotary encoders due to its low cost and ability to provide signals that can be easily interpreted to provide motion related information such as position and velocity.
Optical encoders use light (optics) to identify unique positions for the encoder. Optical encoder engines can be amazingly precise, with some designs hitting 4 million counts per revolution. This makes an optical encoder a desirable choice where resolution matters, from office equipment like computer mice and copiers to medical equipment. With phased-array technology, an optical encoder is increasingly able to perform in much tougher environments which require a combination of durability and resolution, like crane operations and automated vehicle guidance.

An industrial encoder can take punishing operating environments almost as well as heavy duty encoders – rough factories with contamination from dust, particulates, and moisture, in addition to moderate shock and temperature.
